Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based intervention that can be used to treat a range of difficulties including PTSD, anxietyOCDtrauma and depression

Sometimes events occur in our lives that cause us to feel overwhelmed or powerless. These might be one-off events or repeated events that occur over a longer period of time.

When this happens our brain might not be able to process the memory in the usual way. We can find that the thoughts, feelings or physical sensations felt at the time of the disturbing event are easily triggered in the here and now, causing considerable distress.

Positive outcomes are often rapid and you do not have to spend a lot of time talking about the trauma

EMDR is an evidence-based intervention that uses the brain’s natural healing mechanisms to reprocess the memory. The distressing memory loses its intensity and becomes a memory that no longer causes distress in the here and now.

Your Psychologist will help you to safely recall the traumatic memory whilst following a moving light with your eyes. Positive outcomes are often rapid and you do not have to spend a lot of time talking about the trauma. You are in control and awake throughout and can stop at any point.
