Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is an anxiety disorder that is characterised by frequent intrusive thoughts (the O’s) and repetitive behaviours (the C's)

Psychological therapy, tailored to you

Intrusive thoughts of a disturbing nature are surprisingly common

They are our mind’s way of trying to protect us from the very worst events imaginable. However for someone with OCD, these thoughts are very frequent in nature and cause significant amounts of distress. If you have OCD you may find yourself having strong urges to engage in behavioural or mental rituals to try to relieve yourself of this distress. These rituals may take up a significant amount of your time or energy. You may also avoid people, places or situations that you think might trigger the O’s.

Over time, the ‘themes’ of the O’s and the associated C’s can change. However the impact on a person’s life remains the same; high levels of distress, avoidance and rumination.

This is crucial for overcoming OCD in the long-term. In therapy you will develop an understanding of how OCD became a problem in your life and what maintains it. You will learn a number of practical skills and techniques that will help you to allow the O’s to come and go without the need to neutralise them with the C's.

You can take actions towards living a life based on your values and what matters most to you, instead of a life of fear.
