Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Trauma

Psychological or emotional trauma can occur when you have experienced a stressful or frightening event or series of events.

Psychological therapy, tailored to you

Psychological trauma can leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low in mood, angry, numb or disconnected.

There is no objective measure of how traumatising an event might be. The more powerless and frightened you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatised.

Whilst traumatising events sometimes involve an actual threat to life or physical harm, such as a car accident, serious illness or physical attack, this isn’t necessarily always the case. For example, a significant relationship break-up, ongoing work stress or bullying are all common causes of trauma. Often the trauma occurred many years ago.

For example, people can live for decades with the trauma of early childhood abuse or neglect. Psychological trauma can leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low in mood, angry, numb or disconnected. You may view the world and other people as dangerous or hostile, or you may experience high levels of shame or low self-worth.

PTSD and trauma can be successfully treated, even when the traumatic event happened many years ago

Experiencing traumatic events can lead to PTSD. This is where you relive the trauma over and over again through nightmares, flashbacks and/or strong and unexpected surges of panic, anxiety or overwhelm with associated body sensations.

PTSD can cause you to avoid people or places that trigger these symptoms and may cause irritability, anxiety, low mood or insomnia.

PTSD can occur immediately following an event, or months or years afterwards. Symptoms frequently persist for a very long time, or until you seek support.

PTSD and trauma can be successfully treated, even when the traumatic event happened many years ago or occurred over many years. It is never too late to seek help. A combination of different therapies, including ACT, CBT, EMDR and CFT can all be used to help you to understand traumatic responses, reprocess past traumatic memories and overcome trauma symptoms.

Living with ongoing psychological trauma can negatively impact your life in many ways. The aim of all trauma-related therapy here at Brightside, is to enable you to break free from the past and live a rich, full and meaningful life in the present.
